The surgery

Blepharoplasty also known as eyelid surgery can be performed by combining sedative anesthesia and local anesthesia or only local anesthesia that is administered on the concerning surgical area. To help relieve the anxiety and provide comfort during the operation sedative medication can be given. Frequently, sedation and local anesthesia is used. Also, it may be performed under general anesthesia. If general anesthesia is administered you will sleep throughout the operation.

Aesthetic eyelid surgery can be alone performed for upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. Before the operation the excess skin to be removed is marked. Incisions made on the lower and upper eyelid region are concealed with the natural contour or folds that reaches to the outer edges of the eyes (crows’ feet).

In the upper eyelid surgery following the incision along the eyelid , muscle and tissue that lead to excess skin is removed. Then, fat deposits that cause bag under eye are corrected. Comparing to lower eyelid surgery upper eyelid surgery is easier and takes 45 minutes.

Incisions in the lower eyelid surgery are made just 2mm  below the lower lash line  and excess skin is removed by raising tissue flap and muscles and tightening the eyelid gently. 

Following excision of excess skin in upper eyelid surgery incisions are concealed within natural fold of upper eyelid. In the lower eyelid surgery incisions are made one by one or hidden inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival incision).

As to dressing, special bands (strips)are placed the incisions. Eyes are not covered. But, you may not wide open your eyes because of bands. Immediately after the surgery applying icepack will likely reduce the swelling and bruising.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery

There may be little discomfort and pain after the surgery. Pain will go off simple pain killers.While sleeping or lying down you should keep your head elevated and apply cold compress on the eyes to minimize potential swelling and bruising for acouple of days. 

Dressing placed on the incisions may be refreshed in 3 days. Typically, on the 5th day post-op sutures are removed. Recovery is fast and you may resume normal life. 2-3 days following the surgery swelling may develop and then it subsides very fast. Even bruising is rare, as the skin of eyelids is very fine and delicate swelling may likely occur. It will fade within a week and make-up can conceal easily. A pair of sunglasses will also allow you to resume normal life earlier.

Removal of bags and excess skin surrounding eyes resulted from sagging tissue and fat deposits   provides rejuvenated  and rested appearance.
